How Much Does CDL Training Cost in California? (2026 Breakdown)

July 09, 2026 · Nixon Trucking School, Pomona

If you're researching truck driving schools in Southern California, the first question is almost always the same: what is this actually going to cost me? Here's an honest breakdown of every expense involved in getting your Class A CDL in California in 2026 — including the fees schools don't always mention upfront.

The Short Answer

Private CDL schools in California typically charge $3,000 to $8,000 for a complete Class A program. At Nixon Trucking School in Pomona, our Standard package is $2,000 (15 hours behind-the-wheel, 1 DMV test included) and our Premier package is $2,500 (30 hours, 2 DMV tests). If you already have experience and just need to knock the rust off or remove a restriction, our Refresher is $1,500.

Full Cost Breakdown: What You'll Actually Pay

1. Tuition (the big one)

This covers your behind-the-wheel training with an instructor, truck and fuel costs, and test preparation. Tuition varies enormously between schools — some large chains charge $6,000+ for essentially the same DMV test preparation. Always ask exactly how many behind-the-wheel hours are included, because that's what you're really paying for.

2. ELDT Theory Training

Since February 2022, federal law requires all new Class A and Class B applicants to complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through a provider registered with the FMCSA before taking the skills test. Some schools bundle this in; others charge separately ($50–$150 online). Ask before you enroll so there are no surprises.

3. Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)

You'll pay the California DMV an application fee for your commercial license and permit. You must hold your CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the skills test.

4. DOT Physical

Every commercial driver needs a medical certificate from a DOT-certified medical examiner. Clinics around the Inland Empire typically charge $60–$120 for the exam.

5. DMV Skills Test

Here's a cost many students miss: if your school doesn't include the DMV test (or you fail and need a retest), you pay again. Our Standard package includes 1 DMV test and Premier includes 2 — so a retest doesn't blindside your budget.

"Free" Company-Sponsored Training: Read the Fine Print

Some large carriers offer free CDL training in exchange for a work contract, often around a year or more. If you leave early, you usually owe back the training cost — and your starting pay is typically lower while you're under contract. It works for some people, but understand that "free" usually means paid for with your freedom to choose where you work. Paying $2,000 for your own training means your CDL belongs to you from day one, and you can take the best-paying job you can find.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CDL school worth the cost?

Entry-level Class A drivers in Southern California commonly start in the $50,000–$70,000 range, with experienced drivers earning significantly more. Compared to a $2,000–$2,500 investment and 3–4 weeks of training, few career changes pay back faster.

Are there hidden fees at Nixon?

No. Our advertised price covers your behind-the-wheel hours and the included DMV test(s). You'll separately handle your DMV permit fee and DOT physical, like at any school — and we'll walk you through both.
