The DMV charges its commercial license application fee at the time you apply; it covers the permit and, later, the license. Check the current amount on dmv.ca.gov as fees change.

Do I need ELDT before the permit or after?

Before. The theory record has to be on the registry before the DMV gives you the knowledge test.

Can I get a CDL permit without a medical card?

No. California requires the DOT medical certificate at the time of application.

How to get your CDL permit (CLP) in California

To get a California commercial learner permit you need to: complete ELDT theory with a registered provider, gather your documents (REAL ID or proof of legal presence, Social Security number, proof of California residency), get a DOT medical card from a certified medical examiner, pay the DMV commercial license fee, and pass the general knowledge test plus the tests for your class and endorsements. Most Nixon students have the permit within a week of finishing theory.

Proof of identity and legal presence (US passport, birth certificate, permanent resident card, or the documents the DMV lists)

Knowledge tests you will take

General knowledge for everyone. Combination vehicles and air brakes for Class A. Air brakes for most Class B trucks. Plus the test for any endorsement you want on the permit (hazmat, passenger, tanker, doubles/triples). Nixon's practice tests and ELDT365 theory cover all of them.

After the permit

You must hold the CLP at least 14 days before the skills test. That is your behind-the-wheel window at Nixon. The California CLP is valid for 180 days and can be renewed once.
