Getting started

How long does CDL training take?
Most students are licensed in three to four weeks: ELDT theory online tonight, permit within the week, then 15 hours behind the wheel while you hold the permit the required 14 days, then the DMV skills test. Traveling students on the condensed schedule are usually done in about two weeks.
Do I need experience?
No. You need to be 18 or older (21 to drive across state lines or haul hazmat), hold a valid California driver license, and be able to pass a DOT physical. We teach everything from the pre-trip inspection to backing to the road.
What do I need before day one?
A California driver license, proof of US citizenship or permanent residency (the DMV requires it for a CDL; visa holders should call us first, the rules tightened in 2025), a DOT medical card from a certified examiner, and your commercial learner permit. ELDT theory is done online before the permit test.
What is ELDT and do I have to do it?
Entry-Level Driver Training is the federal rule since February 2022. Before the DMV will give you the Class A or Class B knowledge test, a registered provider must file your theory completion. Nixon students do the theory online through ELDT365 (about two hours, $20) and the behind-the-wheel part with us. Read the full explanation.

Cost and payment

How much does it cost?
Class A Standard is $2,000 for 15 hours behind the wheel with one DMV skills test trip included. Premier is $2,500 for 30 hours. Class B is the same two tiers. The Class B to A upgrade is $1,200. ELDT theory online is $20.
How does the $300 down work?
You pay $300 to start and the balance as you train, cleared before your DMV skills test. You can also pay in full at checkout with a card, or split it with Klarna, Afterpay, Zip or Cash App.
Do you accept vouchers?
Yes. Department of Rehabilitation, WIOA through America's Job Centers, workers comp retraining (SJDB) vouchers, and employer sponsorship. We handle the school-side paperwork. Financing and vouchers.
Is the DMV test really included?
Yes. One skills test trip is in every package: our truck, our transporter, to the DMV. Extra attempts are sold per trip so nobody pays for tests they do not need.
I trained somewhere else. Can I rent a truck for my test?
Yes. $700 and we bring the truck to the Fontana DMV for your appointment.

Training and testing

Where do you train?
On our own yard at 1963 Mount Vernon Ave, Pomona, the same yard since 1997. The office is at 2680 Pomona Blvd STE A. Office and training hours are 8 AM to 4 PM Pacific.
How many students per truck?
One student in the seat. Your hours are your hours. Nobody waits in the back for a turn.
Manual or automatic?
We train both. Test on a manual and your license carries no restriction. Test on an automatic and the DMV adds an E restriction, which limits you to automatics.
What if I fail the DMV test?
Most who fail miss one section, usually backing or the pre-trip. You come back for a focused session and we book another trip. Retest trips are priced per trip.
Do you teach in Spanish?
Yes. Instruction, paperwork help and the office, in English and Spanish.

Endorsements

Can I add hazmat, tanker or doubles?
Yes. Hazmat, passenger and school bus require ELDT theory (online, $20 each); tanker and doubles/triples only need the DMV knowledge test. All of it is on our ELDT page. Hazmat also needs a TSA background check. How to get hazmat in California.
Is Class B a different course?
Yes. Class B trains on a straight truck (dump, box, bus) and needs its own ELDT theory. Same 15 and 30 hour tiers as Class A.

Jobs

Do you help with jobs?
We let carriers that hire our graduates know when a student is about to test, help with the pre-employment paperwork, and point you at the job types that hire first around here. We do not guarantee placement; nobody honest does. What hires first in Southern California.

Traveling to train

I am out of state. Can I train with you?
Yes, and you get a travel discount and a condensed schedule so the trip is short, usually about two weeks. Do ELDT theory, your medical card and your permit before you come. Pomona is 25 minutes from Ontario airport. We keep a list of nearby hotels; there is no housing on site.
