How Long Does It Take to Get a CDL in California? (Realistic 2026 Timeline)

July 09, 2026 · Nixon Trucking School, Pomona

One of the biggest advantages of a trucking career over other skilled trades: the training is measured in weeks, not years. Here's a realistic timeline for getting your Class A CDL in California, based on what our students in Pomona actually experience.

The Short Answer: 3–4 Weeks at a Private School

At Nixon Trucking School, most students complete training and pass their DMV skills test in 3 to 4 weeks. Community college programs often run a full semester (16+ weeks), and waiting for government-funded training slots can add 30–90 days before you even start class.

Week-by-Week: What the Process Looks Like

Before You Start: DOT Physical & ELDT Theory

You'll get a DOT medical certificate from a certified examiner (a single appointment) and complete your federally required ELDT theory training. The theory portion is done online and most students finish it in a few evenings.

Week 1: Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)

You'll take the written knowledge tests at the DMV to get your permit. Important rule: California requires you to hold your CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the skills test — so getting your permit early is the single best thing you can do to speed up your timeline. We help you prepare for the written tests so you pass the first time.

Weeks 1–3: Behind-the-Wheel Training

This is the core of your program: pre-trip inspection, backing maneuvers, shifting, and real road driving with an instructor. Our Standard package includes 15 hours of behind-the-wheel time; Premier includes 30 hours for students who want maximum practice before test day. Training is scheduled around your life — many of our students train while working their current job.

Week 3–4: DMV Skills Test

Once your 14-day permit period has passed and your instructor says you're ready, you take the three-part skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and the road test. Your DMV test is included in your package, and if you need a second attempt, our Premier package includes two.

What Can Slow You Down (and How to Avoid It)

  • DMV appointment availability — test slots in Southern California can book out. We schedule strategically so you're not stuck waiting.
  • Failing the written permit tests — study first, test once. We give you the prep materials.
  • Not enough practice hours — the #1 reason students fail the skills test at other schools. If you're nervous, the Premier package's 30 hours exists exactly for this.
  • Waiting on funding — government training grants are real (we explain them here) but the approval process alone often takes longer than our entire program.

How Fast Could You Be Earning?

Do the math: 3–4 weeks of training, and 95% of our graduates receive job offers before finishing. Many students go from their first day of class to their first paycheck as a professional driver in under two months.
