How to get a hazmat endorsement in California
Getting the H endorsement in California takes four steps: complete ELDT hazmat theory online with a registered provider (about 2 hours, $20), apply for the TSA Security Threat Assessment and get fingerprinted, pass the hazmat knowledge test at the DMV, and once TSA clears you the DMV adds the H to your CDL. There is no driving test for hazmat. You must be at least 21 and hold a CDL or CLP.
Step 1: ELDT hazmat theory
Since 2022 the DMV will not give you the hazmat knowledge test until your ELDT hazmat theory is on the FMCSA registry. Nixon students do it online through ELDT365 and it files instantly.
Step 2: TSA Security Threat Assessment
Apply online at TSA's HME enrollment site, then visit an enrollment center for fingerprints. Bring your ID and CDL. TSA clearance is valid five years. Clearance usually takes a few weeks, so start it while you study.
Step 3: DMV hazmat knowledge test
Thirty questions on placards, loading, segregation, emergency response and shipping papers. Everything on it is in the theory course.
Step 4: The H goes on your license
The DMV issues the endorsement after both the knowledge test and the TSA clearance are in the system. Many drivers add tanker (N) at the same time for the X combo endorsement.
